"Bobby McGee" performed by the man who wrote it (Kris Kristofferson) along with Rosanne Cash, Elvis Costello, Nora Jones, and John Mellencamp. Enjoy:

This one's old school, and is sort of an inside joke between myself and Mr. Huber. Congrats to him today.

iPod Shuffle

In 1994, Bon Jovi released Cross Road, their first "greatest hits" album. Among the album's "14 classic grooves were three new tracks: Always, Saturday Night, and an updated version of Livin' on a Prayer.

Saturday Night spoke to me the first time I heard it, and it has spoken to me continually since:
Hey, man, I'm alive.
I'm taking each day and night at a time.
Yeah I'm down, but I know I'll get by.
Hey, hey, hey, hey, man,
I gotta live my life.
Like I ain't got nothin'
But this roll of the dice.
I'm feeling like a Monday,
But someday I'll be Saturday night.
There's something hopeful here. It's an acknowledgment of the reality of life's hardships...but there's a strength in the human condition that allows us to shake off the past and look ahead with hopefulness. Each of us has the power to improve ourselves and our experiences. It's not a quick or easy process, but it's a doable one:
Someday I'll be Saturday night.
I'll be back on my feet,
I'll be doin' alright.
It may not be tomorrow, baby that's okay.
I ain't goin' down,
I'm gonna find a way.
You can check out the video here. Below is an acoustic version:

I haven't done this in awhile. I have to admit that it'd be a lot more fun if the record companies would let you embed original music videos:

M-Squared on the Road

Blogging today from Omaha, Nebraska...home of Creighton University, Warren Buffet, Union Pacific Railroad, the College World Series, and about half a million of the world's best people.

I'm up here attending the annual Mid-American Athletic Trainers' Association (MAATA) annual meeting and symposium. Certified athletic trainers (ATC's) are required to complete 20 hours of continuing education each year, and a total of 80 every three years. So here I am...trying to learn something.

In honor of that, any chance to play a Counting Crows tune is a good thing:

I haven't done this for a few days. The video on this one is kind of silly, but it's just a great song:

"Some of it's magic, and some of its tragic, but I had a good life all the way."

I was "introduced" to The Waifs a few years ago at the Smoky Hill River Festival in Salina. They've been one of my favorites since. Just awesome stuff.

And the girl blows a pretty mean harp too:

I was sick yesterday and didn't get to this...so here you go (one of my favorite bands, BTW.)

iPod Shuffle

It's a good day when, out of thousands of songs, the microchip randomly picks Dylan:

Here's a link to a video of him performing it live. Stupid record company won't allow people to imbed it (shame on them for wanting to get paid for what they do).

"I Pray" by Lonestar...appropriate for Ash Wednesday.
I can't quote the Bible
I skipped Sunday school
And I can't count the times I fell, and broke the golden rule
So I don't know if he listens
Sometimes I wonder if he cares
But maybe I'm just wishin'
'Cause I can't even prove he's there

(chorus)
But I pray
He'll watch over my children
I Pray
Just to be a better man
To find the strength to rise above
To be there for the ones I love
To forgive and be forgiven some sweet day
I pray

I confess that I don't bow my head as often as I should
Mostly just when times are bad, rarely when they're good
And I don't hold with too much preachin'
But I was raised up to believe
That a man can't ever stand as tall
As when he gets down on his knees

(2nd Chorus)
So I pray
For a world that's gone half crazy
I pray
For every woman, child and man
To find the strength to rise above
To teach each other how to love
To forgive and be forgiven some sweet day
I pray
I pray

iPod Shuffle

Today's song is on my iPod as part of the "O'Brother, Where Art Thou" soundtrack, which won a Grammy in 2001. That version was recorded by The Whites, but I think this song is best performed by June Carter Cash:

I hit "shuffle" on the iPod. Here's what came up:

Dookie was released during my senior year of high school and will probably always be one of my favorite albums.
